English as a Second Language
(ESL) and Computer Based Training (CBT) are learning programs
for adults that focus on survival English and practical language
skills. The program also emphasizes developing computer literacy
and computer-related job development skills.
Parents & Tots is a pre-school program for toddlers that
serves both adults and little ones. Moms or dads concentrate on
increasing their English vocabulary while the tots practice
speaking and listening in English. The children play games with
other children, learning to follow directions and learn basic
pre-school skills – all in English.
After School Program is for children in kindergarten
through sixth grade and provides a safe haven during non-school
hours and offers structured activities that nurture young
people’s skills and capabilities, including social skills,
vocational interests, and civic responsibilities. Various
programs provide a foundation in basic skills such as reading,
writing, mathematics, science and technology. Several mentoring
programs held in conjunction with the After School program offer
young people sustained relationships with caring adults and
peers who serve as positive role models.
Friday Night Fever Club is a supervised social event for
sixth, seventh and eighth graders. In today’s world, kids face a
host of negative influences unknown by previous generations.
Unfortunately the safety net is tenuous for many children and
without intervention and guidance they face daunting obstacles.
The Friday Night Fever Club provides positive peer interaction
and young people are given the opportunity to improve their
language and communication skills.
Summer Camp is a five-week program combining learning and
fun for local children during the hot days of summer. Besides
enjoying the traditional camp sports and activities, the
children read, use computers to help improve their English
skills, and also visit museums which are worthwhile educational
experiences.
Senior Citizen Outreach is a social program organized by
active seniors. They visit house bound elderly neighbors;
provide companionship; do their shopping and bring them gifts at
holiday times. Coffee and Conversation is an additional social
program for active senior citizens.
Advocacy Outreach is another vibrant contribution of the Center.
The staff is ready to help those who come to the Center with
specific needs – immigration and green card applications,
housing and school concerns, domestic violence issues,
entitlements and more. Working with the entire family helps
everyone and the Center staff encourages families to integrate
in their communities.
Workshops on parenting, health concerns and financial
literacy are also offered.
